Below is a quick run down of various types of VPS control panels that are available:
1. Virtuozzo
One of the leading VPS control panels. Swsoft, the developer of Virtuozzo are allowing people to handle their VPS’s exactly like dedicated servers. With many options supported by the product you could do just about anything. Swsoft uses a technology different then others.
Virtuozzo allows users to use "Burstable RAM". "Burstable RAM" is a technology supported by swsoft. Whenever a user needs more RAM than usual and there is a surplus of RAM used by other users on the server, "Burstable RAM" will allow that user to use more RAM for a limited time. This ability makes Virtuozzo very flexible. http://www.swsoft.com
2. Vmware
Another leading VPS control panel in the web sector. Vmware allows users exactly the same opportunities given by Virtuozzo, although it doesn’t support the "Burstable RAM" technology. However it supports a different technology called "Multi-OS". "Multi-OS" in other terms means, "Multi-Based Operating System". With Vmware you can easily provide more then one operating system working on the same server. This allows companies to reduce costs by not having to purchase different server for different operating systems. http://www.vmware.com
3. Xen
A newborn product still underdevelopment. However it is very popular and many companies have already adopted this VPS control panel because of it's efficiency in limiting the amount of system resources used.
Normally a VPS control panels use high resources when running on a server. But as Xen uses different technique of resource management it has the same features provided by Virtuozzo (except that it doesn’t support "Burstable RAM" technology) and yet does not consume as much resources.
4. Proxmox
is an easy to use Open Source virtualization platform for running Virtual Appliances and Virtual Machines. Proxmox VE is an open snurce project, developed and maintained by Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH. Setup a complete virtual server infrastructure within 1 hour." Starting from bare metal, it is possible to create a full featured enterprise infrastructure including an email proxy, web proxy, groupware, wiki, web cms, crm, trouble ticket system, intranet - including backup/restore and live migration. Nowadays people are faced with more and more complex server software and installation methods. But Proxmox VE is different. Proxmox VE is simple to use: Pre-built Virtual Appliances Install and manage with a view clicks Selection of products for the use in the enterprise Proxmox VE is licensed under GPLv2 (Open source). VPS is a solution offering dedicated software installs (mysql, httpd, php, exim, etc) while still sharing hardware resources with other VPS accounts that are setup on the main VPS node. As such, we use a virtualization software called OpenVZ to virtualize the beefy node's drives and split the drive array into individual containers (a container is also known as a 'slice' which is your actual VPS account).

After getting a free vps server, so now you can play arround with it. Ussually, for a free account, you’ll get a SSH Access. Connect to it using the given password and Install Webmin. Why webmin ? Cause for now I only familiar with the management tool.
In webmin we can set the all server, including but not limited, apache, mysql, proftpd, bind9 dns. One thing you should remember is to install all those server apps. I’m using an Ubuntu server. So I use apt-get install ….

A simple thing to say for VPS is it's just Like traditional hardware, the platform can be understood with familiar terms: servers, drives, IP addresses, public networks, and private networks. This familiarity ensures an easy transition. Yet, our platform allows for the deployment of computing resources as if they were software. Want more memory, larger disk, or an IP? Resources can be managed on-demand. Or we can simple say converting hardware as a software.
Each vps hosting giving various guarantee of the availability of reserved CPU, RAM, and disk. And, at times when a host server’s CPU is not fully allocated, the unused CPU is freely and automatically allocated to other running servers.
